Yes, the Super Bowl only comes around once a year, and the snacks are galore. But does that mean you should throw your month-old New Year’s resolution to stay healthy out the door? We don’t think so.

What if we told you that you could still enjoy the game day munchies at home and can cut out 1,700 calories from your snack intake at the same time? Does it sound too good to be true? It’s not! Lauren Slayton of The Daily Green shared some tips on how to eat strategically this Super Bowl.

Dips

  • Eat This: For a creamy dip, yet slashing your calories in half, replace your 7-layer dip with guacamole! Or try salsa for even fewer calories!

  • Skip: Do you eat cereal-based snack mix by the handful? One large handful of snack mix packs 390 calories—the recipes call for a whole pound of butter!
  • Eat This: With “activity” snacks like pistachios and peanuts (in the shell), the shelling process naturally slows you down. They also contain good fats and one handful will only cost you 170 calories!

Pizza

  • Screen Shot 2013-02-02 at 10.42.25 AMSkip: As much as we love pepperoni, Slayton calls this pizza topping “a nutritional interception.” Just one slice of pepperoni pizza has about 400 calories. And “how many football fans have just one piece?” Slayton asks.
  • Eat This: Opt for a veggie topping of thin, whole-wheat crust pizza. Your pizza magically becomes a tiny 150 calories!

Chicken Wings

  • Eat This: If there’s a demand for chicken wings, serve grilled Buffalo-flavored chicken breasts, and ditch the blue cheese and ranch. Here, you’ll only consume 150 calories per five-ounce serving.
