Why you should care about tea

After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. Milk, Coffee, Kool-Aid, Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Gatorade, Beer, these drinks just can’t compare to the vast amount of tea drank in the world! For many cultures tea is even the focal point of social  interaction. In Middle East culture tea is often used in business arrangements and social situations, and let’s not forget about the English tradition of afternoon tea.

What is Tea?

Tea comes from the leaves and sometimes buds of the plant Camellia sinensis. The leaves are then dried and processed to create the various types of tea e. g. green, black, oolong, red. The plant is native to China and south-east Asia but can also be grown around the world.

Why you should drink it

Taste –  It tastes great, there are many varieties of tea and many different ways of preparing it. If you don’t like one, try another.  You can sweeten your tea with sugar, honey, citrus, and you can even add milk or various spices. Like coffee, it can be equally enjoyed both hot and iced.

Health Benefits –  unsweetened tea is an extremely low calorie beverage, only 2 per serving, it also has a ton of antioxidants, so it’s a great alternative to a sugary drink. You have to be careful though because some bottled green teas contains plenty of sugar, so making tea yourself is probably the healthiest option. There are a ton of other health benefits to tea too.  It has been touted as a cure for various diseases, and even a way to help prevent the effects of aging, but the evidence for these claims does vary.

Caffeine- not as much of a buzz as coffee , but it does have a kick. It will keep you alert but not give you the jitters, about half as much caffeine as coffee. Not to worry for those who want a hot cup of tea before bed though, there are decaf teas available.

So go out and get some tea!  Enjoy a healthier choice this summer.
